Description

Acetanilide is an organic compound with the formula C6H5NH(COCH3). It is a white solid and is the amide derived from aniline. Acetanilide is used as an inhibitor of hydrogen peroxide decomposition and is employed as a stabilizer for cellulose ester varnishes. It has also been used as a precursor in the synthesis of penicillin and other pharmaceuticals. Additionally, acetanilide has analgesic and antipyretic properties and was formerly used in the production of acetaminophen (paracetamol). However, its use has largely been discontinued due to its toxic effects on the liver and kidneys.
