Description
Biuret reagent is a chemical solution commonly used in biochemical assays, particularly in the detection and quantification of proteins. It is composed of copper sulfate (CuSO4) dissolved in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. When biuret reagent is added to a solution containing proteins, such as serum or urine, a complex reaction occurs between the peptide bonds of the proteins and the copper ions in the reagent. This reaction results in the formation of a purple-colored complex, known as the biuret complex, which can be quantified spectrophotometrically. Biuret reagent is widely used in protein assays, including the biuret protein assay and the Lowry protein assay.
